Issue No. 02 Spring 2024

Selected Work · 2021–2024

Selected, hand‑drawn, and frame‑numbered.

Forty‑seven new sequences since the last issue, all built by the same fourteen hands in our Williamsburg studio. Every frame is a keyframe; every flip is drawn twice. No templates, no AI‑generated filler, no two‑week chase for a turntable asset.

An open flipbook caught mid-page-turn, hand poised above the spine.

Five Chapters, One Sequence

How a sequence gets drawn.

A standard sixty‑frame social loop moves through five hands in nine business days. The numbers below come from the 2024 transparency report.

  1. Ch. 01

    Sketch Pass

Two senior animators storyboard the sixty frames on newsprint at a shared lightbox. References, blocking, and a single hand‑held pencil. Two days.

    Day 1–2 · 2 animators
  2. Ch. 02

    Cleanup

The chosen pencil pass is redrawn in ink on Strathmore Bristol, then scanned at 1200 dpi onto the Cintiq rig. No auto‑trace, no vectorize. Three days.

    Day 3–5 · 1 illustrator, 1 animator
  3. Ch. 03

    Sequence

Frames are assembled on the studio's twelve‑stage page‑turn rig at 60fps, checked at half‑speed and quarter‑speed, and looped by hand. Two days.

    Day 6–7 · 1 animator
  4. Ch. 04

    Sound Design

A producer lays in two channels of foley and one bed of score, mixed for the buyer's primary placement (feed, in‑stream, or landing hero). Half a day.

    Day 8 · 1 producer
  5. Ch. 05

    Delivery

Three aspect‑ratio masters, a poster frame, and a contact sheet of every keyframe delivered as a single zipped issue folder. Half a day.

    Day 9 · 1 producer

From the 2021 Human‑Only Animation Charter

"No machine draws the keyframe. No template draws the page. Two hands, one lightbox, sixty frames."

Humanflipbook is a senior animation studio. We don't generate frames and we don't fill storyboards with stock. Each project is owned by a two‑person team from kickoff to delivery — an animator and an illustrator who draw, sequence, and sound‑design the work themselves. There are no freelancers, no offshore subcontractors, and no shortcuts that put a machine between the brief and the frame.

"Human‑only" is a working condition, not a slogan. It shows up in our charter, in our published rate card, and in the way every issue is delivered: as a numbered sequence of hand‑drawn frames, captioned and contact‑sheeted, ready for your buyer's first cut. If a sequence ever ships with an AI‑generated keyframe, we replace it at our cost and disclose the lapse in our next transparency report.

We took the charter public in 2021, the first North American motion studio to do so. We renew it every January. The full text lives at the bottom of this page, alongside our rate card and our address.

What Clients Say After Delivery

"Margaret and Devon sent us a contact sheet before the masters. Sixty hand‑drawn frames, captioned like a film strip. Our media buyer used the contact sheet as the pitch deck. We renewed for eight more sequences the following quarter."
Priya R. Anand Marketing Director, Glossier
"Most studios hand you a folder of loops and disappear. Humanflipbook sends a numbered issue with a poster frame, a sound mix, and a hand‑drawn keyframe for every second of screen time. It reads like a small magazine, and it sells like one too."
Jonas Weller Head of Brand, Loom
